Hungarians wanted the right to rule themselves, so in 1848 Hungarian Magyars rebelled against Austrian rule. The Magyar revolt was crushed but Hugarians pressured Hapsburgs for a compromise. The dual monarch was formed on June 8, 1867. Each country had its own parliament and constitution, but they had the same ruler (Franz Joseph) and they shared ministries.
