Napleon's crowning happened at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Napoleon crowned himself and it marked "the instantiation of modern empire". Since Napoleon crowned himself, he took the crown and put it on his own head instead of someone else doing it which was the tradition, this showed people who Napoleon was and what his ruling was going to be like.
