In this experiment, Rutherford observed when alpha particles were projected at a flat piece of gold foil. Most of the particles traveled directly through the gold foil. About 1 out of 8,000 alpha particles were deflected from their straight path by over 90 degrees, proving the existence of protons in an atom.
