Rome was sacked in 1527 by Holy Roman Empire, Spanish, and some Italian troops who could not be paid by their commander after defeating the French in Italy. The sack of Rome weakened the power of the Papacy and devastated the city of Rome. The sack of Rome is classified under states and other institutes of power because it was an important event in European politics which weakened the power of the Papacy.
