Germany, who had signed the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact only 2 years earlier, launched the largest land invasion in history. There were 4.5 million axis power soldiers invading the USSR. This completely changed the war. Germany was now fighting a war from two sides. The eastern front also turned out to be the most lethal part of the war.
