After WWII, people knew they had to find a way of avoiding another similar global conflict. Countries worked together to build an organization that would:

support people who wanted to choose their own government
help countries co-operate on trade issues
protect smaller countries against invasion by larger countries
ensure that no single country controlled the world’s oceans
“We the peoples of the United Nations, determined to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind”
