The Quartering Act was passed so colonists were forced to make room in their households for British troops. The colonists were angry by this because they felt like it was forced upon them without their consent. The housing of British troops led to skirmishes with the Patriots like the Boston Massacre.
"However, the New York colonial assembly disliked being commanded to provide quarter for British troops–they preferred to be asked and then to give their consent, if they were going to have soldiers in their midst at all."
