Near Fredericksburg, Virginia, newly appointed Union General Ambrose Burnside led his 120,000 soldier army across the Rappahannock River, to meet the 80,000 soldier army of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. It ended in a Confederate victory.

General Ambrose Burnside is the person that inspired the fashion of Sideburns.
