A shadoof (shaduf) is a device that is used to lift water. It is essentialy a pole balanced like a seesaw. There is a rope with a bucket at one end and a weight at the other. People could operate by dropping the bucket down and then the weight would bring it back up.
With developement of a a water lifter, people could easily access water. Agriculture improved and they had more food.
