After Japan's defeat in WW2, a spark of rivalry between the Nationalists, who were led by Chiang Kai-shek, and the Communists, led by Mao Zedong, began due to both groups trying to fight over control of China. The primary reason these groups fought was to gain power and resources in China. The Chinese Civil War ended after the Nationalist Kuomintang army lost to Mao Zedong's Communists in 1949.
