Although the exact date is still uncertain, historians believe it was on August 12th that Thomas Edison invented the phonograph. This became America’s first way to record sound and play it back. Edison achieved this by covering a wax cylinder with tinfoil and running two separate needles across the foil. He spoke into a tube that was shaped like the bell of a horn. One needle recorded the sound while the other played the sound back. Over the next century, this invention would continue to improve and develop. Today, we can record sound with just the push of a button.
