27 jun 1844 año - The (literal) Fall of Joseph Smith

Descripción:

In 1844, Smith had a falling out with several of his advisors, including the general of the Nauvoo militia, Robert Foster, over the economic management of Nauvoo. Using the new newspaper called ‘The Nauvoo Expositor,’ Smiths critics aired their grievances. Fearing a revolt, Smith ordered the militia to destroy the printing press that printed the Expositor. This was extremely unpopular, and fearing an even greater revolt, Smith declared martial law. In response to this, the Illinois government ordered the city of Nauvoo to surrender to their militia. While the Nauvoo council surrendered, Smith attempted to flee, but was quickly caught. He was charged with inciting a riot, and later the charges were elevated to treason. Shortly after his arrest, Smith was chased by an armed mob. His closest friend Hyrum tried to block the door and protect Smith, but he was shot in the face. Smith fired on the mob as they charged into the room, but failed to stop them. He was shot multiple times before falling out the window to the street below, where he was shot several more times. Five men were arrested for his murder, but were acquitted of all charges.
