The Prince was written to show rulers how to rule practically, he believes that a ruler has to make difficult decisions for his subject and that rulers should be respected and feared instead of liked. Machiavelli also points out in the book why past Italian rulers have failed and stated his belief that if Lorenzo de' Medici follows the book he can return Italy's honor and pride back to the country. the long-term impact was that a lot of rulers changed their ways and ideas of ruling.
