The first battle between the French and British in the French and Indian War took place on May 28, 1754. Young Washington was a private at the time who was marching to a nearby Fort, when him and his squad ran into French soldiers and began fighting. Ten French soldiers died with 21 taken prisoner, and 1 British troop died. Though fighting began in spring of 1754, Britain and France did not officially declare war against each other until May 1756.
