12 oct 1492 año - Columbus Lands in the Americas

Descripción:

Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who made many famous voyages representing Spain. In 1492, after receiving funding from the Spanish monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella, Columbus set sail across the Atlantic Ocean in search of a more direct trade route to the affluent trading hubs in Asia. On October 12, Columbus' crew sighted land and went ashore in what is now known as the Bahamas. Columbus believed that he had landed in the West Indies, and therefore referred to the native peoples he met as "Indians." The explorer returned home to Spain with gold, spices, and "Indian" captives to present to the king and queen. They were very pleased with his discoveries, and eventually funded 3 more trips for Columbus to explore the Americas.

Although Columbus died believing he had discovered a new route to the West Indies, he actually uncovered something much more revolutionary: the "New World." This discovery completely transformed the course of history, heralding in the age of exploration and eventually colonialism. The Columbian Exchange entirely changed the fabric of the word, and it was enabled by Columbus' findings.
