England had been supporting a series of revolts against Spanish rule in the Netherlands, leading to increased tensions with Spain. King Phillip II gained permission from the Pope to attack England, both hoping that they could sway the country back towards Catholicism. However, the English proved superior in terms of long range naval weapons and tactics, and handily defeated the Spanish fleet, which lost more than half of its ships by the time it returned to Spain after a long retreat. The war brought England to the forefront of European politics and helped elevate it to a force to be reckoned with.
