On July 4, 1776, the Congress formally agreed with the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson, Roger Sherman, Robert R. Livingston, John Adams and Benjamin Franklin had gathered in Philadelphia to write and format the document. When the Congress accepted the Declaration of Independence, the Americans began to celebrate. This became known as the holiday 4th of July.
