With Merina establishing closer ties to the United Kingdom in the mid-late 19th century, the British are hesitant to allow the French to establish a colony on the Island. Such a colony would additionally give them another route to British India.

In exchange for giving up their claims to Madagascar and Zanzibar, the French are given the Seychelles Islands, which made up the majority of the colony of Mauritius.
