Martin Luther, a priest and a professor of theology, posted his 95 theses attacking the legitimacy of indulgences. His 95 theses emphasized that the only way for humans to reach salvation is through faith. They were written in Latin and intended to spark a debate among theology experts about removing indulgences in order to reform the Catholic church.
The posting of the 95 theses lea to a long awaited diversion from the Catholic church in the form of the Protestant reformation. The Protestant reformation was the main cause of the 30 Years War, which split Europe in half. Protestantism was the first time in Europe that a personal relationship with God was encouraged. This helped form the Western individualism that has led us the Capitalist run society we see in the West today.
