During the war many soldiers were taken prisoner. In 1864 109 Union soldiers escaped from Libby prison in Richmond after weeks of digging. Unfortunately, 48 of the escapees were later captured by the Confederates and two of them drowned. However, 59 were able to make their way back into the Union army.
