Albert Sabin created the other polio vaccine that is used. OPV, or Oral Polio Vaccine, uses a weakened polio virus which Sabin believed would cause permanent immunity to polio. It's primary benefits are that is it cheaper than the IPV, can protect the gut and does not need trained medical personnel to administer. On the downside it requires refrigeration being a live virus and does run the risk of infecting someone with polio while at the same time in very rare cases causing paralysis.
