Descripción:

Through contact with a Hungarian lady in Anja's barracks, Vladek was able to keep track of his wife in the Birkenau section of the camp. When Vladek visits Birkenau for work, he gets to see Anja for the first time since they arrived at Auschwitz. Vladek becomes a shoemaker in the camps. He hears about new barracks being built closer to Vladek, these were for women. With his new job, Vladek is able to fix Anja's mean Kapo's shoes. Her Kapo is pleased with the job, and so she treats Anja better and keeps her safer.

By October of 1944, Vladek has saved enough to bribe Anja's transfer to the barracks nearer to him.
