In Auschwitz, Vladek is put in a group to work, and like many Jews at the camp, he was given his own number - 175113. He stuck with his friend Mandelbaum, who later wasn't seen again. The Kapo of Vladek's Quarantine group wanted to learn English. As Vladek knew both English and Polish, the Kapo was happy with Vladek and kept him safe. The Kapo eventually helped him to get work as a tinsmith.
Vladek becomes a shoemaker for a while in the camps, and is then transferred to blackwork. Soon after, Vladek returns to Birkenau as a tin-worker to pull apart the machinery of the gas chambers. Rumours said that the Russians were approaching, and so the Germans ordered this work as they didn't want to leave a sign of what they did. Here Vladek sees the chambers for himself.
