Japanese company 'Matsushita' introduced VHS recorders.
Around the same time, Sony launched its own competig VHS in the Betamax format. This was an analog--recording and cassette format of magnetic tape for video.
VHS could hold more footage than Betamax; on average they could hold a two hour long movie, as opposed to Betamax's one hour limit.
VHS was embraced by the video rental industry because of this very reason.
Another advantage of VHS tapes was that they were smaller, lighter and significantly cheaper.
VHS made deals with motion picture companies, meaning that VHS had the ability to release films on tape long before Betamax.
The first movies released on VHS in America were The Sound of Music, Pattern and M*A*S*H.
These averaged at around $50.00.
