2 jul 1777 año - Siege of Fort Ticonderoga

Descripción:

Fort Ticonderoga was the most famous and heavily fortified position the Americans had at the time. Major General Burgoyne led a force of 9,100 British and German troops to launch a 3 pronged attack on the fort, which was vulnerable to artillery fire from 3 nearby hills. Inside Fort Ticonderoga were 4,000 American troops, headed by Major General Arthur St. Clair, left to defend against Burgoyne on one flank, and the Hessians on the opposite flank. St. Clair recognized that the fort was not defensible and made the career ending to "save the army and lose his character." On July 5, St. Clair ordered a retreat under the cover of darkness. The British pursued the fleeing Americans which resulted in the minor Battle of Hubbardton and the Battle of Fort Anne. Congress and George Washington were llvid that St. Clair lost Fort Ticonderoga without a single shot being fired. For this action. Major General Arthur St. Clair was removed from his command and court martialed. 40 Americans died, 40 more were wounded, and 234 were captured. 35 British/Hessians were killed, and 150 more were wounded.
