1 sept 1957 año - Little Rock High School

Descripción:

The Little Rock Nine were a group of nine black students who enrolled at an all-white High School in Little Rock, in September 1957. Their attendance at the school was a test of the Brown v. Board of Education. On September 4, 1957, the first day of classes at Central High, Governor Faubus called in the Arkansas National Guard to stop the black students’ entry into the high school. Later in that month, President D. Eisenhower sent in federal troops to escort the Little Rock Nine group into the school. The impact of this movement had many positive and negative effects. The positive effects were that after the school year of 1957-1958, Ernest Green became the first African American to graduate from Central High School. Extremely powerful Civil Rights Activist Martin Luther King Jr. attended his ceremony. As King said in a telegram addressed to President Eisenhower, "the overwhelming majority of southerners, Negro and white, stand firmly behind your resolute action". It was true- many all over the country supported desegregation and Eisenhower's part in it. Nonetheless, there were those who stood against it. However, the negative effects were that during the event, intense protests, riots even, were formed near the school, ultimately endangering the safety of the students. Many more protests would follow, against specific decisions, specific figures, or just desegregation as a whole. After that school year, Governor Faubus closed all high schools in an effort to stop desegregation, with the favour of the public on his side. However, one year later, he was forced to reopen all schools again on federal order.
