9 abr 1940 año - THE 1940'S

Descripción:

New technologies in the 1940's (such as technicolour and sound) made films much more 'modern and watchable'.
The decades most profitable year was 1946, when popular films such as It's A wonderful Life (dir. Frank Capra), The Big Sleep (dir. Howard Hawkes), and My Darling Clementine (dir. John Ford) brought many audiences to the theatre.

However, during the war, the film industry began to contribute to the war effort by producing propaganda films. These films captured the nations war time activities, and were made with the intent of normalising the war.
Popular war films include The Best Years of our lives (dir. William Wyler) and In Which We Serve (dir. Noel Coward and David Lean).
Films began to become much more realistic, and strayed from the heavily enforced escapist themes that previous decades of films were based around.
Additionally, technology such as technicolour was hugely limited due to cuts in funding, resulting in many more black and white films returning to the screens.

The change of mood within the film industry consequetnly created a successful genre and style known as 'film noir'.
These films had heavy themes of pessimism, fatalism, and menace. They had cynical undertones. This was a fairly new concept in Hollywood filmmaking, as films began to reflect the melancholic mood of the nation at the time.
NOTABLE FILM NOIRS: Double Indemnity (dir. Billy Wilder)
Laura (dir. Otto Preminger)
Out of the Past (dir. Jaques Tourneur)

Additionally, another film genre that became popular within this decade was 'B-Movies'.
These were shorter, had lower budgets, and therefore lower quality, and were usually shown when supporting feature films in the theatre.
B-movies became popular with the introduction of double features; audiences could watch two films for the price of one.
