13 dic 1916 año - White Friday/Alpine Front Line Avalanches Italian Alps

Descripción:

In December of 1916, during the thick of World War I, a series of avalanches in the Italian Alps killed about 10,000 Italian and Austrian soldiers fighting against each other. Some people claim that the avalanches were purposefully triggered by the activities of soldiers on both sides in efforts to destroy their opponents forces. Heavy snowfall that winter was had led to the possibility of avalanches in the region. On December 13th, the first avalanche slid down the mountainside of Mount Marmolada. The avalanche brought down about 100,000 tons of ice, snow, and rocks into Austrian soldier territory that was lying directly in its path. Though 200 soldiers survived, 300 others died in the avalanche. Within the next few weeks, more avalanches struck the area, with vast amounts of snowfalls causing many more thousands of people to die
