December 28th 1895: The Lumiere Brotheers showed ab audience a collection of their documentary films. These included the single shot film called 'Le Arrive d'un train en gare de la Ciotat'. In this film, the camera was placed near the edge of the track, so the train gradually increased in size as it pulled into the station until it seems as though it would crash into the screen. Audience members ducked, screamed or got up quickly to leave. It was a thrilling experience.
The most profound, modern use of this in modern film is the 'king of the world' scene in Titanic (1997).

After this, establishments began showing films, such as 'The Great Train Robbery' (1903). They were converted into shop fronts called 'Nickelodeons', because they cost a nickel to view. The film industry at this time was seen as entertainment only for the lower classes, because upper class people still favoured theatre over film.

George Melies & George Albert Smith were two of the first filmmakers to explore fictional ad phenomenal films.
George Albert Smith was a driving force behind the British cinema industry, and is kown as the pioneer of British film.
Some of his films include; Grandma's Reading Glasses (1900), The Kiss in the Tunnel (1899), and As Seen Through a Telescope (1900).

George Melies: In the span of 16 years (1896 - 1912), Melies made over 500 movies. He was formerly a magician, and wanted to channel his practical magic into movie magic as he was a huge visionary.
In doing this, he invented many camera tricks and built his own modernised camera, because the Lumiere Brothers refused to sell their design to him.
One of his most notable films is 'Le Voyage de la Lune', filmed in 1902. This was one of the first films to include special effects and the camera tricks that he had invented, such as time-lapse photography, multiple exposures, dissolves, pyrotechnics, theatrical machinery, etc.
He is the pioneer of science fiction film and fantasy.
