Act of Parliament aimed at reducing the massive amount of tea held by British East India Company and to help the financially struggling company survive; supposed to convince colonists to purchase tea on which the Townshend duties were paid, thereby agreeing to accept Parliament's right of taxation; also meant to end the smuggling of tea; coalition of colonists mobilized opposition to delivery and distribution of the tea; resistance culminated in the Boston Tea Party
