13 mayo 1574 año - The Conquest of Tunis

Descripción:

Tunisia was called Ifrīqiyyah in the early centuries of the Islamic period and was the smallest state in the Maghrib but consequently the most cohesive. In 1534, it was successfully occupied by the Ottoman but the Spanish troops forced them to evacuate it on the following year and the Ḥafṣids came to rule Tunisia under Spanish protection until the Ottomans reconquered the country in 1574.
The Conquest of Tunis in 1574 marked the final conquest of Tunis by the Ottoman Empire over the Spanish Empire. This was an event of great significance as it decided that North Africa would be under Muslim rather than Christian rule and ended the Spanish Conquista of Northern Africa started under Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon. The capture of Tunis in 1574 also sealed the Ottoman domination of the eastern and central Maghreb. Despite all of that, piracy remains the chief purpose and main source of income of all these settlements along the Barbary coast.
