The Great Coalition is the unlikely alliance of John A. Macdonald; the leader of the Conservative party, George Brown; the leader of the Liberal party and George-Etienne Cartier; the political leader in Canada East. The leaders began working towards creating a federal system of Upper Canada and Lower Canada, but the goal was to expand the arrangement to include other colonies in British North America, as well as Rupert's Land and the North-Western Territory.
