After the gold was discovered in New Caledonia which is a part of the Pacific Coast region along with Vancouver Island. Governor James Douglas quickly declared New Caledonia a British Colony to keep it out of Americans hands and named it British Columbia. After news spread that there was gold in the new territory the non-Aboriginal population grew from a few hundred to at least 30 000 causing violent conflict between the First Nations and the miners causing the Fraser Canyon War. By the 1860s the gold rush was over and many migrants settled in, what is now, British Columbia creating diverse communities.
