Slavery was abolished in British North America but was still legal in the southern part of the United States. To help enslaved Black people escape to the northern states and British North America and a network of safe housing and people was developed and called the Underground Railroad.

The underground railroad was a chain of safe houses that slaves could use to escape the harsh owners and laws of the south? Between 30 - 40 thousand slaves used the Underground Railroad to flee to Canada where they would eventually settle.
