10 jun 526 año - Sts. Sergius and Bacchus

Descripción:

Constantinople, 527-536

Known as the "Little Hagia Sophia" this church exhibits some of the elements later used on a much larger scale in Hagia Sophia. It was built by Justinian likely before his reign as emperor. It was positioned next to his palace and served a monophysite monastery nearby.

Plan: it has an octagonal nave and exedrae joining the nave to the surrounding ambulatory. The floor plan, however, is askew, and the central octagon does not align perfectly with the surrounding rectangular space

relevant terms: exedrae
