Old St Peters was built as a martyrium above the burial place of St Peter, the first Bishop of Rome, by Constantine. The church was built in the form basilica used for Roman administrative buildings. This form conveyed a sense of authority and allowed plenty of room for congregational gatherings. It is a rectangular form including a nave with two side aisles, a transept which cut across the top of the nave to accommodate liturgical activities, a narthax, and a clerestory.
