At around the age of 5, I asked my parents to call me "Tom" or "Thomas". Perhaps this is because it is my dad's middle name, but more likely it is because I had no idea what it was to be a girl or boy. I knew I was a girl, I had long hair, wore pink, and my name was Mary Nell! I must be a girl. I knew inside that I just was not very "girly", instead I was a tomboy. I liked action figures and toy cars, but I also enjoyed a good Barbie or Disney princess movie.
