"Liberia is founded as a colony for African Americans fleeing the United States.

The American Colonization Society's 'back to Africa' movement, advocating African American colonization of East Africa, was supported by both abolitionist and slaveowners. Pro-slavery groups thought free blacks inspired slaves to want freedom, and so threatened the institution of slavery."
