Due to conflicts over slavery and other issues, the southern states in America seceded and fought for independence from the Union. The north prevailed and soon abolished slavery.

The Civil War took a tremendous amount of federal power in order to bring a group of states that favored slavery into a nation that recently abolished it. No compromises were made in order to convince the South to rejoin the Union except for promises of reconstruction. Giving the states any more power would allow Confederate values to thrive in the south.
