Sergeant Floyd died of appendicitis while camped just south of present Sioux City. He was buried there, and later a tall obelisk was constructed and designated a National Historic Landmark. He is the first white American known to have been buried in what would become Iowa, and he is the only soldier to die on the Lewis and Clark expeditionAñadido al timeline:
