Senator Henry Clay introduced a series of resolutions in attempt to seek compromise between North and South, the Fugitive Slave Act was amended and the slave trade in D.C. was abolished. For a time it kept the Union from splitting, and it essentially delayed the outbreak of the Civil War for a decade.
