In 1815 Mount Tambora, located on the island of Sumbawa in present-day Indonesia, violently erupted with a Volcanic Explosivity Index of 7. The loud explosion was on April 5th heard up to 620 miles away and the second explosion April10th was heard 1,500 miles away. Villagers choked on poisonous gas, were buried by ash, and plunged into darkness. Around 117,000 people died as a result of this explosion. One year after the explosion was deemed the “Year Without a Summer” due to the paramount climate change the resulted from the explosion.
