3 sept 1939 año - Britain Declares War on Germany

Descripción:

In September of 1939, Britain declared war on Germany in response to Hitler’s invasion of Poland. The first casualty of the war was the ovean liner Athenia, which a German U-30 submarine sunk. Of 1,100 passengers, 112 were killed. Britain’s response was to begin bombing British ships the next day. This was important because it was the second time in twenty five years that Britain had been at war with Germany. This was reflected in the literature through the means of convenience. The rationing of paper had the effect on publication, therefore poems and short stories became favorited. Though it was published in 1943, T.S. Elliot began working on Four Quartets in 1935, which was a, “Masterpiece of the war. Reflecting upon language, time, and history, he searched, in the three quartets written during the war, for moral and religious significance in the midst of destruction and strove to counter the spirit of nationalism inevitably present in a nation at war.” This act of Britain (and France) began World War II
