Following the Oregon Crisis, the Hudson's Bay Company was nervous to continue having its western headquarters so close to the American Border. This resulted in the move from Fort Vancouver to Fort Victoria.
To better administrate the region, the British colonial office establishing the Island of which the fort was located as the Colony of Vancouver Island [Officially known as 'the Island of Vancouver and its Dependencies']
