About 170,000 years ago, around the time the Neanderthals existed, archaic Homo sapiens humans living Africa started wearing clothes. This culture of wearing clothes was soon picked up by the Neanderthals who crossed paths with the European Homo sapiens (i.e. the early Cro-Magnons) 30,000 to 50,000 years ago. Prior to that all species of Homo from Homo habilis to Homo heidelbergensis went about butt naked.
Delicate studies of human lice, was what determined what period of time humans began wearing clothes. It was a struck of genius that caused a scientist to ponder if lice could tell us when humans began to wear clothes.
According to the Discovery Report in January 2011, the journal named Molecular Biology and Evolution mentions that Dr David Reed, a mammalogist at the University of Florida, studies lice in modern humans to better understand human evolution and migration patterns. His research shows archaic Homo sapiens humans started wearing clothes about 70,000 years before leaving Africa and migrating into colder climates and higher latitudes, which began about 100,000 years ago. Therefore 170,000 years ago, archaic Homo sapiens humans started wearing clothes. Pinpointing this date would have been virtually impossible to determine using archaeological data because early clothing would not survive in archaeological sites. So he devised a project using DNA sequencing to calculate when clothing lice first began to diverge genetically from human head lice. Because they are so well adapted to clothing, we know that body lice or clothing lice almost certainly didn't exist until clothing was invented by humans. Dr Reed used DNA molecular clocks calculations to pinpoint that 170,000 years ago is the most accurate date. When scientists want to date a biological matter or lifeforms for were no fossils exists except DNA, they use the technique known as DNA Molecular Clock. This technique measures the average rate at which species genome accumulates mutations, to measure their evolutionary divergence and in other calculations.
In 2003, also using lice and DNA Molecular Clocks, Dr Mark Stoneking a geneticist at the Max Planck Institute For Evolutionary Biology in Leipzig, Germany, (who co-discovered Mitochondrial Eve using DNA Molecular Clock back in 1987 alongside his colleagues Rebecca Cann and Alan Wilson at the University of California, Berkeley) estimated humans first began wearing clothes much later in time, about 107,000 years ago.
