In 1054 Christianity had a schism between Eastern Orthodox and Catholicism. The schism was due predominantly to small biblical conflicts (like how many angels can fit on a pinhead) but politics did seem to have an effect as well. The theocratic Byzantine Empire often collided ideologically with the feudalism of Western Europe.
