In 1517, Martin Luther posted the Ninety-Five Theses on the door of a Church. The Theses described the many hypocrisy and the greed of the Catholic Church, particularly the idea of accepting payments for forgiveness. The Ninety-Five Theses and the recent German translation of the Bible began a large religious reformation in many Catholic countries. This religious reformation gave rise to both Protestantism and Calvinism as well as many other branches of Christianity.
