23 sept 1908 año - Olympic Games in London

Descripción:

The 1908 Summer Olympic Games in London was an event that was originally intended for Rome, Italy; this changed in 1906 when Mount Vesuvius erupted and it was determined that Italy would not be ready in time for the games. The games were done in London with the full support of the monarch, King Edward VII (much to the chagrin of the other participants). The games were also not without controversy: Finland refused to be recognized under the standard of Russia, Irish competitors refused to participate as part of Great Britain, and American competitors were involved in protests against and verbal altercations with British competitors. One such competitor was Wyndham Halswelle, who won the Gold in the final of the 400 meter after John Carpenter was disqualified and the other American runners refused to race. Halswelle was later killed by a sniper during World War One.
