Tensions between the US and the Soviet Union began to die down in the early '70s, making way for better discussion to reduce arms. the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT I) were introduced, and allowed the US to peacefully negotiate terms with the Soviet Union. On May 26, 1972, the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty (ABMT) was signed as a result of SALT I, along with the interim SALT agreement on strategic offensive arms. This was an important step to improved US-Soviet relations.
