Prime Minister Trudeau was the first NATO leader to visit Cuba, in January 1976. During his 3 days there, he made very positive relations with the nation's leader, Fidel Castro, and its people. Again, this visit defied America's policy, and President Nixon resented Trudeau for it. Nevertheless, Canada, and its ever-diversifying foreign policy, gained from it.
